Ardrossan, AB — Students and staff from École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary are getting excited to explore and participate in this year’s Rendez-vous de la Francophonie.

Rendez-vous de la Francophonie is an annual festival celebrated throughout Canada from March 3 to March 23 to honour the French language and Francophone culture. This year’s theme is “La Francophonie in 3-D: Diversity, Duality, and Dynamism!” École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary is taking part in the festival by organizing a week-long Rendez-vous de la Francophonie event from March 14-18.

“By participating in the celebration, students will have the opportunity to embrace Alberta’s rich French heritage and the vibrant French language,” says Helene Hewitt, the assistant principal at École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary. “We are a Leader-In-Me school and the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie offers the perfect opportunity to discuss with students the importance of the French language and its significance to our province and county—now, and in the future.”

Throughout the week, students will enjoy a series of French activities that focus on the Francophone culture, the French language, and the benefits of being bilingual in Canada. On Friday, March 18, students will conclude the festivities with an official closing ceremony, which will include a special guest speaker from the Franco-Albertan community and the raising of the Franco-Albertan flag.

“Our students are excited for the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie and by the end of the week I think they will all have a better appreciation for the Francophone history, language, and culture,” says Hewitt. “Ultimately, what we hope they take away from it is a sense of pride in their role as Francophiles—those who love the French culture and language.”

École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary’s raising of the Franco-Albertan flag is one of 35 flag-raising ceremonies taking place throughout province. Both the Franco-Albertan flag raising and Rendez-vous de la Francophonie are events that surround International Francophonie Day, which is celebrated around the globe annually on March 20 by millions of people in an effort to promote the French language and Francophone culture.
