Language Programs
Learning another language can:
- improve listening skills
- improve communication skills in English
- promote acceptance and valuing of other cultures
- increase ability to solve problems and think creatively
- improve test scores in mathematics
Parents do not have to speak a second language for their children to enjoy and be successful in an immersion, bilingual, or second language program.
French Immersion (K to 12)
The French Immersion program aims to prepare functionally bilingual students - giving them excellent English skills and the ability to comfortably speak and write in French. Students complete the regular Alberta Education curriculum (Language Learning, Math, Science, Social Studies, Phys. Ed., Music, Health, and Art) in French, as well as a regular English Language Arts program.
This program is offered at the following Elk Island Public Schools' (EIPS) schools:
- Fort Saskatchewan
- Rural Strathcona County
- Sherwood Park
German Bilingual (K to 6)
Although students are encouraged to enter the German Bilingual program in Kindergarten, children may enter the program in Grade 1. Because students study and use German during part of their class time, children can write and converse comfortably in German by Grade 6. Students also gain an appreciation of German culture through exposure to ethnic music, crafts, festivals, and concerts.
This program is offered at the following EIPS' school:
Ukrainian Bilingual (grades 1 to 6)
The elementary Bilingual program teaches children to listen, speak, read, and write in Ukrainian and English. Students also gain an appreciation for Ukrainian culture through ethnic music, crafts, festivals, and concerts.
This program is offered at the following EIPS' school:
Second Language Programs
While all schools offer French language instruction, others also offer German, Spanish, and Ukrainian. Inquire with your local EIPS' school about opportunities for second language learning for students in grades 4 to 12.
