Let's Talk: Fort Saskatchewan Boundary Review

Approved Boundary Changes

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) has undertaken a review of attendance boundaries for elementary, junior high, and French Immersion programming in Fort Saskatchewan. Let’s Talk: A Discussion on School Boundaries and French Immersion in Fort Saskatchewan provided an opportunity for parents, students, staff, and the community to get involved and provide input to shape education in Fort Saskatchewan.

Given demographic and program population changes, the goal of the review was to determine the best possible use of facilities, programming, and other resources for the maximum benefit of students in Fort Saskatchewan.

We thank all parents, students, and staff who participated in the Fort Saskatchewan boundary review process throughout the 2010/2011 school year. At the August 25 Board Meeting, EIPS’ Board of Trustees approved elementary and junior high school boundary changes in Fort Saskatchewan.

Elementary
Elementary boundaries will be redrawn to maintain three K-6 elementary schools; Fort Saskatchewan Elementary, James Mowat Elementary, and Win Ferguson Elementary. These new boundaries will be implemented in the 2012/2013 school year.

EIPS’ Fort Saskatchewan elementary students in grades 1 through 5 may remain in their current schools until they transition to junior high.  This ‘grandfathering’ does not apply to students in Kindergarten or younger siblings who are not attending school.

Junior High
The Board approved the creation of a single junior high school at the current École Rudolph Hennig facility and one single-track French Immersion elementary school at the current Fort Saskatchewan Junior High facility. These changes will be implemented in the 2013/2014 school year.

French Immersion
Junior high French Immersion students attending École Rudolph Hennig will transition to Ardrossan Junior Senior High beginning in the 2012/2013 school year.

In accordance with Board Policy 17, students who choose to attend a school other than their designated school assume responsibility for their transportation to school; however, school of choice busing services on a yellow school bus may be made available at a fee to parents/guardians.

EIPS will continue to work with families and schools throughout this transition. If you have questions, please contact your school administrator.

Town Hall Forum

On Tuesday, May 31, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) hosted a Town Hall Forum for members of the Fort Saskatchewan community. At this meeting, the boundary review committee shared different options for revised elementary boundaries and options for revised junior high boundaries. The committee also shared the results of the full public consultation process to date – a series of focus groups with parents, students, and staff, as well as an online survey.

Based on the information gathered through the public consultation, the boundary review committee shared with administration its recommendations for revised elementary and junior high boundaries in Fort Saskatchewan. The committee also presented these recommendations at the Town Hall Forum.

Administration will further consider the recommendations from the boundary review committee and determine what recommendations will go forward as information to the Board of Trustees at the regular Board Meeting on June 16. The Board will make a decision on revised elementary and junior high boundaries for Fort Saskatchewan at their meeting on August 25. It is important to note, at this point, no decisions have been made on revised school boundaries.

Following the Board’s decision in August, work will begin on a complete implementation plan for the new school boundaries. The Board’s decisions at the elementary and junior high levels will determine whether changes can be completed for the start of the 2012/2013 school year, or whether the process will involve multiple phases. EIPS will continue to work with all stakeholders, including students and families directly impacted by boundary changes, to ensure the process is as seamless as possible.

Public Consultation

During the first phase of the consultation process, EIPS will be sharing information with stakeholders and looking for feedback from staff, students, and parents through participation in a series of focus group sessions that will be scheduled April 18-28. During Stage 2, the options and recommendations being considered will be reported back to the focus groups, and all participants will be invited to provide their feedback in writing from May 11-20. A Town Hall Forum will be held on May 31 in the Dow Centennial Shell Theatre to report on and discuss the recommendations and feedback with the general public.

If you’d like to get involved in Let’s Talk, we invite you to notify your school principal by April 13, check out our website, and watch for further information and details as the process gets underway. Thank you for taking an interest and joining these important discussions. For more information, please contact project lead Dale Gullekson at (780) 417-8147 or EIPS' Communication Services at (780) 417-8122 or through our online contact form.
