Preparing for Kindergarten
Are you excited to start Kindergarten this fall? Kindergarten is a fun place where you'll learn about numbers and letters, sing songs, make crafts, and play with other kids. We can't wait to see you on your first day!
Kindergarten Activities
Below is a list of fun activities you can try at home with your mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, brothers, sisters, or friends. These activities are a great way to practice some of the things you'll do in Kindergarten. Have fun!
- Sing the ABC song
- Count 10 steps as you walk around your house - you can also hop, skip, gallop, or walk backwards
- Practice printing your name
- Read storybooks, picture books, and informational books with a friend or parent/guardian
- Cut out shapes
- Grab a piece of paper and some crayons and draw a picture of yourself getting ready for your first day of Kindergarten
- Cut pictures from magazines and newspapers to make a collage of things you like
- Trace a star, airplane, or other fun pictures
- Make a necklace out of beads, buttons, or noodles
- Colour a picture
- Sing nursery rhymes and simple finger plays such as The Itsy, Bitsy Spider or Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
- Count out shapes and match them to the right number
- Put together a puzzle - from a box or complete one online
- Count out 10 pennies, marbles, or Cheerios and put them in a bottle
- Use blocks, Lego, or tinker toys to build or copy designs
- Draw a picture in the box and cut along the lines to make puzzle pieces (with an adult's help) - have fun putting your puzzle together again and again
