Introduction
With a population of over 400 students, Wes Hosford Elementary School has 15 regular classrooms for students in grades 1 to 6, two morning and one afternoon Kindergarten classes, and two special needs preschool classes.
Based on the belief that diversifying programs enhances student success, Art, Music, and Drama are offered as an integral part of learning within the regular curriculum. Enrichment modules for students can be found at the grades 4 to 6 levels and are designed to encourage the development of the child. The school uses multiple intelligences learning strategies through which Fine Arts ideas have been integrated with core subjects. A FNMI project also promotes understanding of alternate cultures and enhances student knowledge and exposure to a number of experiences. Focus on early intervention in ECS to Grade 3 enables students to develop confidence and build skills required to be successful in the future.
We believe physical activity and healthy living provide balance and enhance learning. To promote lifelong physical activity we have a well-rounded physical education program taught by classroom teachers focused on movement and daily physical activity. Students are provided with a program that exposes them to activities they may continue to participate in as lifelong learners. In addition, the school is an Ever Active school and promotes student leadership in wellness education.
On the technological side, a portable DELL computer lab with 30 laptops and 30 touch screen netbooks is complemented by an Internet-equipped multimedia research centre in the library consisting of 10 laptop computers. We have wireless Internet throughout the school and SMART Boards in every classroom. All-in-one SMART Board units have also been installed in the music room and library to help with classroom instruction. New this year, students can pursue Lego Robotics opportunities through participation in a club and through regular classroom instruction.
Wes Hosford's Kindergarten program provides an ever-changing and dynamic environment where children learn to share, co-operate, play in groups, and gain knowledge by doing, observing, imitating, and exploring. The program provides learning experiences that meet individual and group needs, interests, and developmental levels. Teachers provide a program in which inquiry is integrated into literacy, numeracy, and science.
The school is also home to a specialized ECS program for a small group of special needs children between three and six years of age. The REACH program provides in-classroom speech/language therapy, occupational and physiotherapy, as well as having a specialized educational programming in a child-centred environment.
Wes Hosford also has a strong School Council that provides support in delivering the appropriate conditions for student learning. The School Council and school staff work as a team to ensure students' learning is enhanced with co-operative projects.
