PLACE
Introduction
A Place to Grow - A Place to Learn
Westboro Elementary School, built in 1970 in southwest Sherwood Park, is home to approximately 300 students and 40 certificated and classified staff. With a well maintained facility, SMART Board-equipped classrooms, computer lab, fully outfitted music room, large gymnasium, and extensive library, the school provides all the elements for students to have an engaging and positive educational experience. The school has a warm and welcoming environment and is well recognized for its commitment to academic excellence, student success, high standards for student conduct, and fostering of good citizenship.
The Westboro Regional Accessible Playground has helped the school become a system special education centre. The school also offers daily intramurals, a track program, a scrapbooking club, yearbook, a boomerang club, school choir opportunities, and a vibrant music program. Student volunteers contribute to the school community by volunteering as office and lunchtime helpers, flag monitors, and safety patrollers.
Staff, administration, and the parent community maintain very high academic and behavioural expectations for children attending the school. The school maintains a quiet and focused learning environment with consistent emphasis on maximizing student achievement. Literacy development is a main focus at the school and includes ongoing upgrades to the Accelerated Reading Program, a Literacy Support program, and enhancement of the library collection. Westboro also focuses on character education with assemblies and community projects, highlighting particular character traits supported with staff follow-up.
Parents are an integral part of the Westboro Elementary School family and vital contributors to the school's success. Parent volunteers collaborate on the School Council, help in classrooms, on field trips, and with hot lunch days. The School Council also fundraises for such items as computer hardware, field trips, school presentations, art supplies, and music equipment.
