Update to Parents regarding international trips - January 2016
Over the past few weeks there has been much in the news in regards to international travel. Many Boards are weighing their options while others have made their intent known.
Our first and foremost concern is with student safety. As a Division, we would never knowingly or willingly put any of our students or staff at risk. Although Elk Island Public Schools has been publicly quiet in regards to student travel, we have been diligently working behind the scenes.
Over the past few weeks, I have worked with our Board and met with our principals who have student trips this school year. I have also been in contact with our trip providers to look at alternative solutions. Our principals have met with parents and teachers to gather feedback in order to make informed decisions.
All of our student trips go through a rigorous process for approval. In light of recent events, we will be reviewing each trip. On a trip by trip basis, we will work with our administrators, teachers, parents and students, while ensuring that we do our due diligence as a Division. In addition, we will use the Canadian Government travel advisories/warnings website to inform our decisions. As parents, you have the final decision as to whether your child goes on a field trip. You may wish to review what the Canadian Government has to say about your child’s field trip destination. Go to the Government of Canada's Travel and Tourism page for further information. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your principal.
At this time, my recommendation to the Board of Trustees is that we proceed prudently with the understanding that we will continue to work with parents if world events change. I must, however, reserve the right to cancel any field trip for any reason I consider necessary.
