Sherwood Park, AB. — Students and staff from École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary are getting set to celebrate its school-wide Rendez-vous de la Francophonie.

Rendez-vous de la Francophonie is an annual festival celebrated throughout Canada from March 2 to March 22 to honour the French language and Francophone culture. This year’s theme is: “La Francophonie in 3-D: Diversity, Duality, and Dynamism!” École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary is taking part in the festival by organizing a week-long Rendez-vous de la Francophonie event from March 20-23.

“By participating in the celebration, students have the opportunity to embrace Alberta’s rich French heritage and the vibrant French language,” says Helene Hewitt, the assistant principal at École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary. “We are a Leader-In-Me school, and the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie offers the perfect opportunity to discuss with students the importance of the French language and its significance to our province and county—now, and in the future.”

On Monday, March 20, students will kick start the festivities with an official opening ceremony, which will include a special musical performance by esteemed Franco-Albertan musician, Paul Cournoyer, and the raising of the Franco-Alberta flag. Throughout the week, students will also take part in a series of French activities that focus on the Francophone culture, the French language and the benefits of being bilingual in Canada.

“Our students are excited for the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie and by the end of the week I think they’ll all have a better appreciation for the Francophone history, language and culture,” says Hewitt. “Our goal is that they develop a sense of pride in their role as Francophiles—those who love the French culture and language.”

École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary’s raising of the Franco-Alberta flag is one of many flag-raising ceremonies taking place throughout province—Elk Island Public Schools’ École Campbelltown also held a flag-raising ceremony on March 2. Both the Franco-Alberta Flag-Raising ceremony and Rendez-vous de la Francophonie are events that surround International Francophonie Day, which is celebrated annually by millions of people around the globe on March 20.

Representatives of the media are invited to join staff and students at École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary as it kicks off Rendez-vous de la Francophonie.
