Sherwood Park, AB. — On May 1, close to 70 students from Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) in grades 4 to 6 will go head-to-head in the second annual Battle of the Books competition at Glen Allan Elementary.

Since September, students from École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary, Brentwood Elementary, Fort Saskatchewan Christian, Fort Saskatchewan Elementary, Fultonvale Elementary Junior High, Glen Allan Elementary, Ministik School, Pine Street Elementary, Uncas Elementary and Wes Hosford Elementary have been busy reading a wide range of novels and testing their knowledge for the opportunity to represent their school at this year’s Battle of the Books, a division-wide literacy competition.

“To make it to the Division level is a big deal for students,” says Jennifer Miles da Silva, one of the event co-ordinators and a Grade 4 teacher at Glen Allan Elementary. “They’ve all had to read a list of selected novels, be tested on their comprehension of that material, and have scored the highest marks on their comprehension in their grade and school.”

During this year’s Battle of the Books, students in each grade will compete as a team in three question-and-answer rounds. Each round will consists of 30 questions based on six selected books the students have been asked to read. Each team will have 20 seconds to answer the questions using the Battle Signs. At the end of the competition, the scores of all three rounds will be added together for an overall battle score. The team with the highest total will win the battle and take home the Battle of the Books Trophy

“Battle of the Books began as a three-book single-school pilot project in 2014,” says Stephanie Gauchier, one of the event co-ordinators and a library technician at Glen Allan Elementary. “So to see it grow to a six-book, Division-wide competition in just three years is astounding. And, to watch our students devour books—all of different genres and authors—makes the hard work that goes into the planning worthwhile.”

Representatives from the media, families and community are invited to join EIPS students at this year’s Battle of the Books competition. There will also be an opportunity to take photos and learn more about the program.
