Sherwood Park, AB. — Strathcona Christian Academy (SCA) Elementary will bring smiles to the stage when it presents Annie Kids, an adaption of the beloved film and Broadway musical, on March 14-15.

Performed by Grade 5 and Grade 6 students from SCA Elementary’s Choir program, Annie Kids takes audiences back in time as it follows the charming young orphan, Annie—recently abandoned on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Set in New York City in the 1930s, Annie enlists the help of the other orphan girls to help her escape the orphanage and find her parents. Despite a series of obstacles, she makes friends with a lovable stray dog named Sandy; a billionaire named Oliver Warbucks, and his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, who together discover the true meaning of family. Students will also perform the movie’s beloved musical classics including Tomorrow, Easy Street, and It’s the Hard Knock Life.

“The show is brilliantly relevant and has an uplifting ending that reminds us of what’s truly important—love, hope and friendship,” says Shelley Allen, the music director at SCA Elementary. “It’s a good old-fashioned musical that will make you laugh, smile and sing along too.”

Launched in 2011, SCA Elementary’s Choir program offers its students the opportunity to develop acting, singing and creative-movement skills while also teaching them about teamwork, co-operation and collaboration. “That’s the goal of the program,” says Allen. “We want to provide students with the opportunity to be part of the preforming arts, to display their talents and build confidence by presenting a musical classic to the community.”

Currently, 60 SCA Elementary students are enrolled in the afterschool choir program, all of whom have a role in the upcoming production of Annie. “We’re really excited to finally be able to perform in front of an audience,” says Maggie, a Grade 5 student who plays the role of one of the girls living at the orphanage. “It’s been a really good experience for all of us. Everyone works together and I think we’ve all improved. It’s going to be fun and I think everyone who comes is going to enjoy it.”
