Respiratory or Gastrointestinal Illness Outbreaks in Schools
All schools report to Alberta Health Services (AHS) when school-wide absenteeism due to illness reaches or exceeds 10 per cent. AHS investigates by contacting families to determine the nature of the illnesses and may declare an illness outbreak. If an illness outbreak is declared, families will receive a letter from AHS with further guidance. The school will also implement additional precautionary measures.
The length of an outbreak status period is typically 14 days from the date 10 per cent illness absenteeism was first reported to AHS or longer unless the illness rate has dropped below 10 per cent on the 14th day.
