How old does my child need to be in order to register?
- To be eligible to attend kindergarten in the 2018-19 school year, your child must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2018.
When is the kindergarten program available?
Programs generally operate on the regular school calendar, commencing in early September and finishing in late June. For the 2018-19 school year, all EIPS schools are offering one kindergarten option, alternating full-day programming. Children attend two full-days a week—and occasionally, three days a week so that EIPS meets the required 475 instructional hours. For schedule details at each EIPS school, see the Kindergarten Programming & Services page.
What will my child learn?
Kindergarten programming promotes child development in early literacy, early numeracy, citizenship and identify, personal and social responsibility, physical skills, creative expression, and community and environmental awareness. More information about kindergarten programming is available on Alberta Education's website.
Is it advantageous for my child to attend a kindergarten program?
Because a child's experience and learning in Kindergarten enhances their social and intellectual skills, children are better able to make the transition to the Grade 1 learning environment.
What will it cost to send my child to a kindergarten program?
For kindergarten, schools often charge an activity fee, which includes things such as field trips, and a noon-hour supervision fee. The cost of these fees can vary from school to school and are charged on a cost-recovery basis (see Administrative Procedure 505, School and Administrative Fees). Sometimes schools also charge a fee for incidental costs, such as supplies and yearbooks. These are optional fees that parents can either opt in or opt out of. An additional Payride fee may be charged to families who have a child using Student Transportation services and living less than 2.4 kilometres from where they attend kindergarten. For more information contact your local school or read through the EIPS School & Transportation Fees 2017-18 schedule.
What is a parent's role in the classroom?
Parents are encouraged to volunteer their time in the classroom and to assist in supervising, such as field trips. To volunteer, you must first provide a criminal record check. Information is available in Administrative Procedure 490, Volunteers in Schools, or contact your child's school for further details.
