As part of Elk Island Public Schools’ (EIPS) ongoing efforts to enhance the literacy and numeracy of students in all grade levels, the Division administers two assessment tools during the school year—Star Early Literacy/Star Reading and Star Math. The assessments focus on literacy and numeracy, and are digitally based. The goal is to provide timely information to teachers, help enhance classroom instruction and ensure all student learning needs are identified.
The results of each assessment give the teacher a clearer picture of a student’s learning needs and help determine if any subsequent instructional planning is needed. The results will not be used toward a student’s grade and there's no need to study ahead of time. The assessment tools simply provide information to the teacher so they can better understand where each student is in terms of reading comprehension and mathematic ability.
If, after analyzing the results, it’s determined a student can benefit from extra support, the teacher will contact the parent or guardian to discuss possible strategies to be used to better support students.
