Elk Island Public Schools invited all parents/guardians, students, staff, and interested community members to provide feedback on the proposed rural Strathcona County boundary options at one of two open house sessions.

Fultonvale Elementary Junior High
November 4 or 5
5:00-8:00 p.m.

These events followed a drop-in format, allowing participants to review and provide written feedback about the strengths and challenges of three proposed rural Strathcona County boundary map options. Feedback on the options was collected using both paper and online surveys. A total of 275 surveys were completed (paper: 25 completed; online: 250 completed).

We invite you to review the thematic summary of the feedback collected through the paper and online surveys. This summary will be included in the complete Board Report presented at the December 19 Board Meeting, and trustees have also received a verbatim copy of all feedback collected.

Who Is Affected?

Some students attending the following schools are affected by one or more of the proposed options brought forward for feedback:

     École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary
     Ardrossan Junior Senior High
     Bev Facey Community High
     École Campbelltown
     Clover Bar Junior High
     F.R. Haythorne Junior High
     Fultonvale Elementary Junior High
     Mills Haven Elementary
     Pine Street Elementary
     Salisbury Composite High
     Sherwood Heights Junior High
     Wye Elementary

What about grandfathering?

Please refer to our current rural Strathcona County boundaries and our current French Immersion boundaries so you can compare them to the proposed options.

Option A

Key Features:

  • Expands École Élémentaire Ardrossan Elementary, Ardrossan Junior Senior High, Clover Bar Junior High, Fultonvale Elementary Junior High, and Mills Haven Elementary boundaries.
  • Reduces Bev Facey Community High, École Campbelltown, F.R. Haythorne Junior High, Pine Street Elementary, Sherwood Heights Junior High, and Wye Elementary boundaries.
  • Makes very minor reductions to Fort Saskatchewan Elementary, Fort Saskatchewan High, and Rudolph Hennig Junior High boundaries.
  • Redraws Bev Facey Community High and Salisbury Composite High boundaries with all of the Salisbury Composite High boundary being west of Highway 21 and most of the Bev Facey Community High boundary being east of Highway 21.
  • Maintains the current boundaries of Ministik School and Uncas Elementary.
  • With the exception of Fultonvale Elementary Junior High, all schools follow the EIPS feeder school framework.
  • The total number of students impacted by the changes to boundary lines in this option is 279 (4.27%). Thirteen of the 279 students are French Immersion students. (Source: Baragar)

Transportation Implications:

  • If students (currently designated to Fultonvale Elementary Junior High) residing south of Wye Road, north of the Whitemud Freeway extension, and west of RR 232 are grandfathered after they become designated to Mills Haven Elementary and Clover Bar Junior High, they would not have busing as a direct bus would be needed to transport students to their new designated schools.
  • All other changes could support grandfathering with busing with minimal additional costs, but the level of service would not be what affected students currently receive and would include increased ride times and service through a transfer site.
  • The changes will reduce the number of buses transporting students across major roadways including the Whitemud Freeway extension, Wye Road, and Highway 21.
  • Bell times at Fultonvale Elementary Junior High will need to be adjusted with an earlier start and dismissal.
  • This option is based on current transportation agreements with neighbouring school divisions and if agreements are altered, busing would reflect agreement changes.
