When is the kindergarten program available?
Programs generally operate on the regular school calendar, commencing in early September and finishing in late June. All EIPS schools offer one kindergarten option; alternating full-day programming. Children attend two full-days a week, and occasionally, three days a week, to meet the required 475 instructional hours.
What will my child learn?
Kindergarten programming promotes child development in early literacy, mathematics, citizenship and identify, personal and social responsibility, physical skills and well-being, creative expression, and environment and community awareness. More information about kindergarten programming is available on Alberta Education's website.
Is it advantageous for my child to attend a kindergarten program?
Yes. Because a child's experience and learning in kindergarten enhances their social and intellectual skills, children are better able to make the transition to the Grade 1 learning environment.
What will it cost to send my child to a kindergarten program?
For kindergarten, schools generally charge fees that can include such things as special activities, field trips and noon-hour supervision. These fees can vary from school to school and are charged on a cost-recovery basis (see Administrative Procedure 505: School and Administrative Fees). Learn more about fees in EIPS. An additional Payride fee may be charged to families who have a child using Student Transportation services and living less than 2.4 kilometres from where they attend kindergarten. For more information, contact your child's school.
What is a parent's role in the classroom?
Parents are encouraged to volunteer their time in the classroom and to assist in supervising activities, such as field trips. To volunteer, you must first complete a Confidentiality Undertaking Declaration for Volunteers. Information is available in Administrative Procedure 490: Volunteers in Schools, or contact your child's school for further details.
