  • Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child need to be in order to register?
To be eligible to attend kindergarten in the 2023-24 school year, your child must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2023.

To be eligible to attend kindergarten in the 2022-23 school year, your child must turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2022.

When is the kindergarten program available?
Programs generally operate on the regular school calendar, commencing in early September and finishing in late June. All EIPS schools offer one kindergarten option; alternating full-day programming. Children attend two full-days a week, and occasionally, three days a week, to meet the required 475 instructional hours.

What will my child learn?
Kindergarten programming promotes child development in early literacy, mathematics, citizenship and identity, personal and social responsibility, physical skills and well-being, creative expression, and environment and community awareness. More information about kindergarten programming is available on Alberta Education's website.

Is it advantageous for my child to attend a kindergarten program?
Yes. Because a child's experience and learning in kindergarten enhances their social and intellectual skills, children are better able to make the transition to the Grade 1 learning environment.

What will it cost to send my child to a kindergarten program?
For kindergarten, schools generally charge fees that can include such things as special activities, field trips and noon-hour supervision. These fees can vary from school to school and are charged on a cost-recovery basis (see Administrative Procedure 505: School and Administrative Fees). Learn more about fees in EIPS. An additional transportation fee is charged to families who have a child using Student Transportation services the fee amount is based on how far you live away from the school your child attends and whether or not they're attending their designated school. For more information, contact your child's school.

What is a parent's role in the classroom?
Parents are encouraged to volunteer their time in the classroom and to assist in supervising activities, such as field trips. To volunteer, you must first complete a Confidentiality Undertaking Declaration for Volunteers. Information is available in Administrative Procedure 490: Volunteers in Schools, or contact your child's school for further details.

How do I register?
Kindergarten registration opens for the 2023-24 school year on Feb. 1, 2023. To register, simply complete the online registration form that will be posted on the kindergarten registration page at that time.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION CHECK LIST:
