Leah Floyd
Candidate for the City of Fort Saskatchewan, Electoral Subdivision No. 1

Q: Why do you want to be a school trustee, and what experience do you bring to the role?
A: I am running for school trustee because I care deeply about public education. I have taught in three school divisions, including in three schools in Fort Saskatchewan, and I am a parent with children currently enrolled in Elk Island Public Schools.
My time in the classroom has shown me the dedication and professionalism of school staff, even as they navigate the challenges of large and diverse classrooms. As a parent, I see how these challenges and the efforts to address them impact students daily through the experiences of my own children.
I am practical, solutions-focused, and committed to supporting decisions that reflect the needs of students, staff, and families. I believe my broad perspective will be an asset to the Board of Trustees as we work together to strengthen public education across the division.
Q: One of the primary roles of a school board is advocating for public education and the Division. How do you see yourself fulfilling this responsibility?
A: I am a committed supporter of public education and believe it plays a vital role in building a strong, successful society. A high-quality education opens doors and lays the foundation for a bright future. Every student deserves access to that opportunity through the public school system.
As a trustee candidate, I see advocacy as a key part of the role. This includes celebrating and sharing the successes of our division, recognizing areas where we can grow, and engaging in open, respectful dialogue with parents, families, and the communities we serve. I am also committed to advocating for continued and increased investment in public schools, to ensure all students have the support and resources they need to thrive.
Q: What do you see as the biggest issue facing Elk Island Public Schools in the next four years, and what is your vision for addressing that issue?
A: One of the most significant challenges Elk Island Public Schools will face over the next four years is maintaining high-quality programming while working within a limited budget. It will be essential to find meaningful efficiencies and ensure that as much of the budget as possible is directed to schools and the front-line staff who support students every day.
Classroom complexity continues to grow, and current funding levels have made it difficult to fully address the diverse needs of students. Finding opportunities to expand support for inclusion and specialized programming will be key to ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Continued advocacy for increased public education funding remains critical to supporting the long-term success of public schools and the students we serve.
Q: What kind of relationship should a school division and its Board have with its community, its parents and its families?
A: Elk Island Public Schools should continue to build strong, respectful relationships with its communities, parents, and families by being welcoming, inclusive, and responsive. As a public school division, it is essential that all stakeholders feel heard and valued, and that they have the opportunity to engage in decisions that affect them.
Fostering meaningful collaboration, maintaining transparency in decision-making, and demonstrating reliability and trustworthiness are key to strengthening these relationships. By prioritizing open communication and mutual respect, Elk Island Public Schools can ensure families and communities feel connected, supported, and confident in the work of the division and its board.
Q: What do you believe should be done to ensure diverse, equal, respectful and inclusive environments in schools?
A: Elk Island Public School policies prioritize the creation of welcoming, caring, and supportive learning environments. As a public school division, it is our responsibility to ensure that every student feels safe, included, and valued in their school community.
To support this vision, all policies should be closely aligned with these goals. Establishing clear expectations and applying them consistently helps create a sense of stability and fairness across our schools. When students and families know what to expect, and trust that those expectations will be upheld, it strengthens the sense of safety and belonging that is essential for learning and well-being.
Q: If elected, how would you support Elk Island Public Schools alternative programs—which include French Immersion, German Language and Culture, Ukrainian Language and Culture, Alternative Christian, Logos Christian, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Outreach and Sport for Life?
A: Elk Island Public Schools is fortunate to offer a wide range of alternative programs that give students meaningful opportunities to learn and grow within a strong public education system. Helping students discover pathways that reflect their passions and strengths is key to supporting them in reaching their full potential.
As a trustee candidate, I value the important role these programs play in our division. I will prioritize ensuring that alternative programs continue to meet the evolving needs of the communities we serve. At the same time, I will focus on offering choice while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
